only action is light: an exploration of self-discovery and healing

the ancient Greeks believed that the temple of Asclepius, the god of healing, was a place where people could seek cures for their physical and mental ailments. the temple was also a center of learning and philosophy, where the followers practiced a holistic approach to health and well-being. one of the core principles was that only action is light, meaning that only through active participation in the healing process can one achieve enlightenment and harmony with oneself and the world.

followers set aside three to five days, where they hoped to receive a dream or a vision from Asclepius or his daughter Hygieia, the goddess of health. they performed prayers, music therapy, purifications, dance, baths, exercises, massages and other forms of physical and mental stimulation. everything was designed to create an atmosphere of harmony and tranquility that would facilitate the healing process.

a symbol of spiritual and psychological balance, the medicine wheel is used by many indigenous cultures, represents the four directions, the four seasons, the four elements, and the four aspects of human nature: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. each direction has a corresponding color, animal and lesson that can guide one's journey of self-discovery and healing. the wheel teaches that one must honor and integrate all aspects of oneself and one's environment in order to achieve wholeness and harmony.

each direction has a corresponding stage of life and challenge that one must face and overcome. the east direction represents birth, spring, air, and the mental aspect. the color is yellow, the animal is eagle, and the lesson is illumination. the challenge is to seek wisdom and clarity through learning and curiosity. the east direction teaches that one must actively engage with one's mind and seek new perspectives and insights in order to grow and heal.
